What SterJo Weather Forecast Did
Before the Yahoo Weather API was retired in January 2019, SterJo Weather Forecast was a fully functional desktop weather application for Windows. It provided current weather conditions and 5-day forecasts for any location worldwide, without requiring a browser. Key capabilities included:
- Real-time temperature, humidity, wind speed and visibility for any city, ZIP code or region
- 5-day weather forecast with daily high/low temperatures
- Portrait and landscape display modes to fit different desktop layouts
- Lightweight background operation — used minimal CPU and RAM
- Fast location search — type a city name or ZIP code and get results instantly
- Available as both an installer and a portable version with no installation required
The tool was popular among users who wanted quick access to weather information without opening a browser or relying on the Windows weather tile, particularly on older hardware running Windows XP through Windows 8.
Why the App No Longer Works
SterJo Weather Forecast relied on Yahoo's public Weather API to fetch current conditions and forecasts. On January 3, 2019, Yahoo permanently retired this API without replacement. Since the app has no way to retrieve weather data without a working API endpoint, it effectively became non-functional after that date. The application file still runs, but it cannot load any weather data.
This was not a flaw in the software itself — many weather applications built on the Yahoo Weather API faced the same situation simultaneously. Unfortunately, rebuildling the app around a different data source would require a full redevelopment effort, which has not been undertaken.
Alternatives for Windows Desktop Weather
If you need current weather on your Windows desktop, these options work reliably today:
- Windows Weather App — Built into Windows 10 and 11 via the Microsoft Store. Provides forecasts, radar maps and hourly breakdowns powered by The Weather Channel and MSN Weather data.
- Weather Watcher Live — A third-party Windows desktop weather application with customizable display options, weather alerts and a system tray icon.
- Taskbar Weather — Shows current temperature directly in the Windows taskbar with a minimal footprint.
- weather.com or accuweather.com — Both sites work well in any modern browser and provide detailed forecasts at no cost.
- Microsoft Edge or Chrome new tab weather widget — Many browser home pages and new tab pages include a weather summary that updates automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SterJo Weather Forecast still available to download?
The download is still available for archival purposes, but the application will not display weather data because the Yahoo Weather API it relied on was retired in January 2019.
Will the app ever be updated to work again?
There are currently no plans to update SterJo Weather Forecast. Rebuilding it with a new weather data source would require significant development work. We recommend using the Windows built-in Weather app or a browser-based alternative.
What Windows versions did it support?
SterJo Weather Forecast supported Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10 in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions.
What was Yahoo Weather API?
Yahoo provided a free, publicly accessible API that let developers retrieve real-time weather conditions and forecasts for any location. It was widely used by lightweight weather apps. Yahoo shut it down in January 2019 as part of a broader retirement of free developer APIs.
What is the best free weather app for Windows today?
The built-in Windows Weather app (available via the Microsoft Store on Windows 10 and 11) is the most convenient option. For a dedicated desktop widget, Weather Watcher Live is a well-maintained free option with extensive features.
